Yesterday, RCMP officers arrested two individuals involved in trafficking cocaine. Magella Raymond, 70 years old, and Josée Caisey, 60 years old, from Baie-des-Sables, Quebec are facing charges of importation and possession of cocaine for purposes of trafficking.
These arrests are linked to the seizure of 270 kg of cocaine from a sailboat attempting to dock in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This search was conducted on July 18, 2020, in response to a report by the RCMP to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). The investigation was conducted by officers from the RCMP's Québec City Detachment, with assistance from the Bas-Saint-Laurent Detachment. The investigation revealed that the accused had agreed to transport the large quantity of drugs from the Caribbean to Canada. They appeared by video conference yesterday afternoon before the Nova Scotia Provincial Court and were released on conditions.
The RCMP's Border Integrity Program and Federal Detachments work to protect the marine border in order to fight organized crime and smuggling. To do so, a marine strategy has been put in place with multiple partners such as the Canadian Coast Guard, the CBSA, the Canadian Armed Forces, Fisheries and Oceans, as well as international partners.
