On March 24, officers from our Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) arrested an individual for uttering threats and public incitement of hatred. The individual is Zachary Vachon, 22, of Hemmingford. His statements targeted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the general population.
These charges resulted from a brief investigation by INSET after threats uttered by Mr. Vachon were reported. He also allegedly called for the death of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his Facebook page.
The accused was released on a Promise to Appear on June 8 at the Montréal courthouse. He has been charged with the following under the Criminal Code:
- Uttering threats
- Incitement of hatred
- Hoax regarding terrorist activity
Public appeal
The RCMP takes seriously any threats that can affect one's sense of security. Violent statements will not be tolerated, regardless of whether they are made on social media or by any other means of communication. The perpetrators may face criminal charges and are liable to severe penalties. Such incidents must be reported if we are to combat this type of crime.
