RCMP NL welcomes back the newly trained Police Dog Services (PDS) Team of Constable (Cst.) Brad Power and Police Service Dog (PSD) Lar.
The team left Whitbourne for training in June, 2020, and successfully passed the rigorous five-month RCMP Basic Dog Handler course in Innisfail, Alberta. They earned a period of well-deserved rest upon their return to the province, while in mandatory quarantine for 14 days. Now, fully recharged and ready to serve residents on the East coast of Newfoundland, they report for duty out of Whitbourne Detachment.
Cst. Power, a twelve-year veteran of the RCMP who grew up in Conception Bay South, NL, began raising dogs for the RCMP Imprinting Program in 2011 while posted in Penticton, British Columbia. He raised seven Potential Police Service Dogs since that time. Four of the canines were successful in passing the training and are currently serving as Police Service Dogs with the RCMP across Canada.
Lar was the last dog to be raised by Cst. Power and we feel it only fitting that the two were paired together for Cst. Power's introduction into his new career path. The two, who have been side by side since Lar was a young pup, successfully completed training and graduated together on November 6, 2020.
Cst. Power and PSD Lar have been posted to the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Services section out of Surrey, British Columbia. The two will continue to work in Whitbourne while awaiting the completion of their transfer.
RCMP NL wishes the best of luck to you both on a successful career!
