RCMP NL warns of scam using local telephone numbers

March 5, 2020
St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador

News release

RCMP NL warns the public of a telephone scam circulating the province today where the incoming calls are displaying local telephone numbers.

The call starts with an automated recording identifying the source of the call as being either Canada Revenue Agency or Service Canada. The recording informs the caller that there is a warrant out for their arrest and to press one to speak to an agent. This is a scam!

RCMP NL has received an increase in calls of concern from local residents today inquiring if there is a warrant for their arrest which is tying up emergency response lines. If there was a warrant for your arrest you would receive a knock at your door, not a phone call to your house. Do not participate in the phone call and simply hang up the phone.

Please report these scams to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
