Heading into the May 24th weekend, RCMP NL recognizes the enjoyment that many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have in the recreational use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) but reminds operators that this activity needs to be done in accordance with the legislation and with safety in mind.
Here's a brief look at some keys points of the Motorized Snow Vehicles and All-Terrain Vehicles Act:
- It is illegal to operate an ATV on a highway except to cross from one side of the road to another, and in that case the operator must have a valid drivers licence, insurance and registration to do so and 100 yards of visibility.
- All occupants of an ATV must be wearing an approved helmet.
- A person must be 16 years of age to operate an adult-sized ATV (over 90 cc)
- A person who is 14-15 years of age can operate an ATV under 90 cc but only when being supervised by a person who is 19 years of age or older.
- A person under the age of 14 years is not permitted to operate an ATV of any size.
- A person who permits an under aged child to operate an ATV without supervision can be charged for doing so.
All-terrain vehicles in their design, are not intended for highway use and are meant for off-road terrain. RCMP NL encourages the use of all available safety equipment including helmets and seat belts.
RCMP NL also reminds the public of the current COVID-19 recommendations and special measures orders, such as safe physical distancing and staying within your bubble or double bubble, whether enjoying the great outdoors or staying at home. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend!
