Officer involved shooting in Lloydminster
Lloydminster, Alta. – On Feb. 2, 2020, at approximately 1:00 p.m., Lloydminster RCMP received a call from a complainant who reported a stolen vehicle in the Lloydminster area.
RCMP members located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. An altercation occurred that resulted in an RCMP member discharging their service pistol, however the vehicle was able to flee the area, pursued by RCMP members.
At approximately 2 p.m., the vehicle was located by RCMP members in in the central area of Lloydminster. A further altercation occurred that resulted in another RCMP officer discharging their service pistol. The male driver was deceased and the female passenger was taken into custody without incident. The female passenger was not injured and remains in police custody.
Two RCMP members were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
This incident involved officers from the Lloydminster, Kitscoty, Vermillion, Wainwright, Maidstone, and Onion Lake RCMP, RCMP Police Dog Service, and RCMP Traffic Services.
The Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the officer involved shooting and the actions of police. The RCMP will continue to investigate the events leading up to the confrontation with police.
