The RCMP's IM/IT Program and Shared Services Canada have installed significant additional capacity to accommodate telework.
We need you to help keep our remote network access stable and available for everyone:
- limit your access to the Internet and do not stream video
- do not stay connected for extended periods of time - disconnect once you have accessed what you need
- avoid connecting during peak periods - vary your work hours if possible
- download large documents in advance or during off-peak periods
If we experience complete saturation of our network due to excessive bandwidth use, the VPN service will become unstable and could impact our ability to maintain remote access. It could also compromise important public facing applications.
If the issue becomes extreme, internet access could be blocked to protect the network.
Additional best practices for VPN use and guidelines are available on the COVID-19 Infoweb page.
We remind employees that use of RCMP IM/IT systems for personal profit, personal recreation or illegal purposes or storage of non work related information is prohibited. This is particularly important in times where our systems are stressed. Please take time to review section 2.4 of the RCMP Acceptable User Practice for RCMP Information Technology.
The IM/IT Program randomly monitors the use of networks to identify users who are accessing the internet excessively for personal recreation or non-work related activities. Unauthorized use will be brought to the attention of divisional management.
We all have a responsibility to ensure the security and availability of RCMP systems for their intended use, and your cooperation in using our systems and networks appropriately is greatly appreciated.

Acting Chief Information Officer
