Experienced Police Officer Program - Federal Policing
Federal Policing plays a key role in one of the RCMP's most fundamental mandates: national security.
We use an intelligence-led approach to identify, investigate, disrupt and dismantle criminal organizations, groups, and individuals that threaten Canada. Our success is built on the strength and diversity of our specially trained employees, who are centralized in the Edmonton and Calgary areas. The passion and expertise of these employees fuels the success of the complex, high-level investigations that keep Albertans safe and secure.
Positions within the RCMP's Federal Policing program are competitive and earned only after experience in front line policing and developing investigative techniques and other specialized skill sets. Direct entry in to RCMP's Federal Policing specialized units is available to experienced police officer's who have gained relatable and necessary skills and experience through other law enforcement agencies and are now looking for a new challenge at a federal level.

The Federal Policing program is comprised of the following specialized units:
Federal Serious & Organized Crime (FSOC)
These teams are responsible for investigating serious and organized crime activities that are international in scope or inter-jurisdictional with national implications. The priority focuses of FSOC teams include money laundering, human trafficking/smuggling, cyber crime, opioids, and transnational organized crime activities that are the greatest threat to the security and people of Canada.
Requirements
The candidate must have a demonstrated ability with:
- judicial authorizations
- source management
- surveillance
- ability to conduct complex investigations
- experience with project management and major case management is required
Within FSOC are further specializations:
Integrated Border Enforcement Teams (IBET)
These teams secure Canada's borders against criminal threats such as drug trafficking, firearms, and illegal migration. Members in this area are focused on prevention, detection and disruption of threats to border security, which includes: collaborating with partners to track and investigate national level targets and high-risk travellers, maintaining national and tactical awareness to stay apprised of potential threats at the border or abroad, maintaining a presence in high-risk border regions at ports of entry, and intelligence gathering and joint operations in partnership with other law enforcement agencies.
Requirements
The candidate must have a demonstrated ability with:

- ability to conduct complex investigations
Cybercrime
The cybercrime team investigates and disrupts major cyber threats targeting the government, critical infrastructure, businesses, and institutions. The unit is comprised of regular members, civilian investigators, and analytical support personnel who use cutting edge technology to support investigations related to cyber systems used to facilitate or support terrorist activity, money laundering, drug trafficking, human trafficking and organized crime.
Requirements
The candidate must have a demonstrated ability of:
- experience in investigating serious cybercrime related offenses that delve into the areas of ransomware, network intrusion, insider threat, business email compromise, denial of service, national security, fraud, internet based trafficking and intellectual property infringement
Cryptocurrency Tactical Operational Support Teams (CTOS)
The unit provides investigative assistance and support to files where cryptocurrency has been used. They conduct cryptocurrency tracing and provide investigators with actionable intelligence, as well as provide outreach and awareness for the private sector.
Requirements
The candidate must have a demonstrated ability of:
- experience investigating financial crimes related offences in the realm of organized crime, national security, or financial crimes, where cyber is used as a tool to facilitate the crime and crypto-currency is the offence related property
- experience in blockchain tracing is required
Financial Crime Team
This team investigates organized financial crime and upholds Canada's economic security from crimes such as money laundering, corruption, fraud, and market manipulation.
Requirements
The candidate must have a demonstrated ability of:
- experience investigating financial crimes offences including, but not limited to, serious frauds, money laundering, and proceeds of crime resulting in positive enforcement outcomes
Addtional criteria deemed to be an asset:
- post-secondary education in fields related to finance, accounting or business administration
- professional designations such as CFA, CPA or CFE and completion of the Canadian Securities Course
- work experience related to accounting or finance
Intelligence
The RCMP Intelligence Program is comprised of multiple streams and includes both regular and civilian members. The teams guide federal and international criminal investigations through collection, analysis, and reporting of intelligence in order to identify and disrupt organized crime and other serious criminal activities.
Requirements
The candidate must have a demonstrated ability of:
- knowledge of the intelligence process
- proven skills and abilities in successful recruitment and handling of human sources
- surveillance and working in a covert environment
Addtional criteria deemed to be an asset:
- several years of operational policing experience focusing on specialized investigative programs including, but not limited to, organized crime, cybercrime, national security and major crime would be an asset
Specialized Policing Support Services
Specialized Policing Support Services is a robust program that oversees a diverse portfolio of teams including Covert Operations, Digital Forensics Services, Explosives Disposal Unit, and Protective Security Services. These teams provide specialized operational support by deploying assets and resources that utilize the most complex and high-risk investigative techniques employed by Canadian and international law enforcement.
Requirements
Due to the varied nature of Specialized Policing Support Services positions, experienced police officers are required to prove their skillset directly related to the stream for which they are applying.
Digital Forensics Services: The team is seeking experienced police officers currently trained in computer and mobile forensics.
Explosives Disposal Unit: To be considered for direct entry in to the Explosives Disposal Unit, experienced police officers must have graduated from the Canadian Police College (CPC) Police Explosives Technicians Course (PETC) within the past 5 years or have completed a CPC Police Explosives Technicians Validation Course (PETVC) within the past 5 years and have practical experience.
Various positions within the RCMP covert teams are available to experienced police officers who:
- have successful completion of one or more courses or certifications, including those delivered online, from a recognized university, college, or professional institute in the following fields:
- electrical, electronic, software or computer engineering; computer science; electronic technologist/technician; electronic security systems; mechanical or metallurgical engineering technology; security technology; machinist; drafting; mechanic; welding; mechanical security systems (e.g. locksmith); engineering, engineering technology
- or, eligibility for certification by a Canadian certifying body as an electronic technician/technologist and the CompTIA Strata IT Fundamentals certification test
- or, an Amateur Radio Operator Certificate from Innovation, Science and, Economic Development Canada (ISED) at either the Basic or Advanced level and the CompTIA Strata IT Fundamentals certification test
- have successful completion of one or more courses or certifications, including those delivered online, from a recognized university, college, or professional institute in the following fields:
Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET)
The RCMP has a wide range of national security-related mandates and responsibilities, including national security criminal investigations. Edmonton and Calgary INSET's undertake national security criminal investigations into terrorist criminal activities, as well as any offence arising out of a threat to the security of Canada.
Investigators with INSET have the opportunity to work closely with partner agencies nationally and internationally. Their duties include national security criminal investigations and enhancing preventative measures. National Headquarters conducts central oversight for all INSET units.

Requirements
Given the specialized, complex and high-risk nature of the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET), any incoming experienced police officers should have the following skill sets and/or experience, and be able to meet the following criteria:
- significant experience within specialized investigative programs including, but not limited to, major crime, serious and organized crime, financial crime, cyber crime, and national security
- experience in Major Case Management principles and systems
- significant experience in one or more of the following areas: investigative interviewing, judicial authorizations, human source management, undercover operations, cyber/online investigations, surveillance, international operations
- demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment, as well as a strong networking and relationship building background
- demonstrated flexibility and able to work various shifts when required
- able to obtain and maintain an RCMP Top Secret Security Clearance with Indoctrination
