The Oromocto RCMP has arrested two people in connection with copper wire theft in Haneytown, New Brunswick.

In the morning hours of April 4, 2024, members of the Oromocto RCMP were advised by a concerned citizen that two suspects were burning copper in their back yard. Police officers attended the residence which resulted in two arrests, a vehicle being seized, and recovered what is believed to be stolen copper wire and other items. The recovered items are believed to be associated with a number of previously reported thefts in neighbouring communities.

A 40-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman, both from Fredericton, were taken into custody and later released on strict conditions. They will both appear in Fredericton Provincial Court on July 17 at 9:30 a.m.

There has been a rash of copper wire thefts across the province, amounting in losses to businesses, homes, and government departments. Copper wire thefts also pose a significant risk to public safety as it can limit access to 911 and other critical infrastructure.

In April 2024, New Brunswick RCMP had asked for the public's help in identify potential copper wire thefts, and these arrests were the result of the public reporting suspicious activity.

"The RCMP is committed to intelligence-led policing, and this investigation is the latest in a series of police actions aimed at reducing property crime in communities across New Brunswick," said Sergeant Stéphane Esculier of the West District RCMP. " We welcome and encourage any and all reports that may lead to further arrests."

If you witness suspicious activity near an electrical substation or power poles, always contact your local police. If you have information that could help further the investigation, please contact the Oromocto RCMP at 506-357-4300. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), by downloading the secure P3 Mobile App, or by Secure Web Tips at www.crimenb.ca.

The investigation is ongoing.
