On September 6 at 3:38 pm Carcross RCMP received a report of a single bus roll over at kilometre 52 on the South Klondike Highway, necessitating a closure of the highway for several hours.
In response to a report of a bus roll over accident on the South Klondike Highway, Carcross RCMP responded as well as emergency medical services from both Yukon and Alaska. The highway was closed for approximately 3 hours.
12 of the 24 passengers were injured in the accident, those with minor injuries were transported on to Skagway, while the more serious injuries were transported to Whitehorse.
The passengers were tourists on an excursion from a cruise ship docked in Skagway. Police investigation determined that the bus driver experienced a medical event which caused him to veer off the roadway and resulted in the bus crash. Traffic resumed in both lanes at 6:20 pm.
