The New Brunswick RCMP is warning the public of cryptocurrency scams, and is reminding people to be extra vigilant when investing their money.

In an era where digital communication is continuing to gain in popularity, it is important to be careful and do your research when it comes to investing your hard-earned money. The rise of cryptocurrency and other digital investment opportunities has been linked to an increase in scams and fraudulent schemes. Verifying sources before making any financial commitments has never been more important.

Recent reports have highlighted instances where individuals posing as officials from local, provincial, or federal government agencies have encouraged people to invest in cryptocurrency. These scammers often use convincing language and sophisticated tactics, including fake endorsements and seemingly legitimate links, to lure unsuspecting investors.

We urge the public not to click on links found in unsolicited messages or social media posts that claim to offer investment opportunities suggested by what appears to be government officials. Instead, it is important to verify that these opportunities are legitimate through official government channels.

You can take the following steps to protect yourself:

1. Verify: If you see a suggestion from a government official, or a celebrity, verify it by visiting the official website of the respective government agency or by contacting them directly.

2. Avoid clicking suspicious links: Do not click on links sent through unsolicited emails, messages, or social media posts. These links may lead to phishing websites designed to steal your personal information.

3. Conduct thorough research: Before investing in any cryptocurrency or financial product, conduct extensive research to understand the risks involved. Look for reviews and feedback from credible sources.

4. Consult a financial advisor: Speak with a certified financial advisor to get professional advice about your financial situation and investment goals. You can verify whether an advisor or firm is registered by visiting www.aretheyregistered.ca

Investing in cryptocurrency carries a greater risk of loss of funds, even through legitimate investment portals, because third-party institutions like banks and brokerages are not involved. Taking these precautions will help safeguard your finances and ensure that your investment decisions are based on accurate and trustworthy information.
