On February 6, 2024, Manitoba RCMP officers responded to two separate reports of youths uttering threats involving firearms at two schools in western Manitoba. One school was in the RM of Alonsa and the other in the RM of Portage la Prairie.

In the first incident, it was reported that a youth had threatened to bring a gun to school. The youth was detained and no firearm was located. Further investigation determined that the youth had assaulted two youths earlier in the day and also uttered threats.

A 12-year-old male is facing charges of Assault with a Weapon, Assault, and Uttering Threats x3.

In the second instance, it was reported that a youth had made threats towards students at his school.

The 12-year-old male was located at his residence and arrested. He is facing a charge of Uttering Threats.

Both youths were released from custody with upcoming court dates.

"Every time a threat is made at a school we respond immediately and investigate thoroughly as these cases are not taken lightly," said Corporal Julie Courchaine of the Manitoba RCMP. "It's important for parents and guardians to sit down with their children and talk about the seriousness of making threats in person or online as their actions can lead to criminal charges."
