Gleichen RCMP advise residents to shelter in place – Update #2

News release

On June 15, 2024, Gleichen RCMP received a report that a male sustained a serious injury to his arm from a believed gun shot in the Map 8 area of Siksika Nation. RCMP located the victim and ensured he received medical attention. The investigation revealed who the suspect was and RCMP quickly located him.

For everyone's safety, area residents were either evacuated and a shelter in place was issued. The RCMP Emergency Response Team attended and contacted the suspect, who was in a residence. The suspect surrendered to officers.

A 43-year-old individual, a resident of Siksika, was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Attempted murder
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possessing a prohibited firearm
  • Failing to comply with conditions

After a judicial interim release hearing, the individual was remanded into custody and will be appearing in Alberta Court of Justice via CCTV on June 20, 2024.

RCMP have safely arrested a suspect and the shelter in place for the Map 8 area of Gleichen, Alta., is now over.

Gleichen RCMP advises residents to shelter in place

Gleichen RCMP are asking the residents of the Map 8 area of Gleichen to shelter in place. Residents of the area are asked to remain indoors, lock their residences and stay away from windows while officers respond.

The public is asked not to post any pictures or information on police whereabouts while police respond.
