On February 27, 2024, at approximately 3:30 pm, Flin Flon RCMP received a report of a fight with a seriously injured victim at an apartment building on Aspen Grove in Flin Flon. The location is right next to a school, which was placed in a hold and secure as a precaution.
When officers arrived on scene, they located a 19-year-old male from Moose Lake who was suffering serious, life-altering injuries after being attacked with a machete. Officers administered emergency first aid until Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene.
Investigation determined that a fight had broken out between the victim and two males who also live in the apartment building. The two males attacked the victim with machetes. They remained on scene.
Darren Ballantyne, 19, and a 13-year-old-male, both from The Pas, were arrested and both charged with Aggravated Assault, Possess Weapon for Dangerous Purpose. Ballantyne was charged with Fail to Comply with Release Order x5 and the 13-year-old was charged with one count of Fail to Comply with Undertaking.
Ballantyne was taken to the hospital for medical treatment for a minor injury sustained during the fight before being transported to the detachment.
Both males remain in custody. The victim was transported to Winnipeg hospital, where he remains.
