May 16, 2019
Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador

News release

As part of Canada Road Safety Week, Newfoundland and Labrador RCMP will be participating in its 14th National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day which will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019.

Once again, RCMP members across the province will be focusing on road safety, including apprehending impaired drivers. Motorists can expect to see increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints throughout the province as police continue efforts in keeping our roadways safe.

Motorists are reminded that impaired driving is not limited to just alcohol. Drivers can also be impaired and subsequently charged for illegal drugs, as well as the overuse of prescription medications while operating a motor vehicle.

The RCMP encourages the public to immediately call 911 if they suspect an impaired driver. Providing a description of the vehicle and driver, a licence plate number and direction of travel will assist police in locating the vehicle and taking enforcement action.
