Charges have been laid against two correctional officers who were working at the Dorchester Penitentiary in New Brunswick when an inmate, 33-year-old Matthew Ryan Hines, died in May 2015.
On May 27, 2015, Sackville, New Brunswick RCMP received a call shortly before 12:45 a.m. that a Dorchester Penitentiary inmate was pronounced deceased at the Moncton City Hospital following an emergency medical transport from the institution. An investigation was conducted by the New Brunswick RCMP who deemed at the time that foul play was not suspected.
In May 2016, additional information came forward. The Nova Scotia RCMP were then brought in to review the file. The review has resulted in charges being laid against two people.
On January 3, 2018, two men, 48-year-old Alvida Ross and 31-year-old Mathieu Bourgoin, both of Dieppe, were charged with one count each of Manslaughter and Criminal Negligence Causing Death.
Both are scheduled to appear in Moncton Provincial Court on February 26, 2018.
