RCMP coordinated response results in arrest of driver impaired by more than four times the legal limit

A 47-year-old man from Portugal Cove-St. Philip's was arrested for impaired driving near Bishop's Falls on Saturday, May 11, 2024. He faces multiple charges after providing breath samples that were over four times the legal limit.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., police received multiple complaints of a dangerous and possibly impaired driver heading east on the Trans Canada Highway near Bishop's Falls. Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP, Gander RCMP and RCMP Traffic Services Central engaged in a coordinated search for the described vehicle.

RCMP Traffic Services Central located the vehicle a short time later, west of Glenwood. A traffic stop was conducted and signs of impairment were observed. A roadside breath test was administered, which the driver failed.

He was arrested for impaired operation and brought to the Gander RCMP Detachment. He provided further breath samples that were over four times the legal limit. He will face an additional charge of impaired operation over 80%mg.

The man's license was suspended and his vehicle was impounded. He was served with an appearance notice to answer to the charges in court at a later date.
